Acupuncture

Acupuncture these days needs no introduction, this ancient art of healing, over 2000 years old has become mainstream in treating everything from pain, stress and general health to helping to enhance fertility in a safe, natural, effective and drug-free way.

Pre birthing Acupuncture

Prebirthing Acupuncture refers to a series of treatments in the final weeks of pregnancy to prepare Women for childbirth, it helps prepare the cervix and uterus for labour and to harmonise a Woman’s qi & blood as well as supporting emotionally for Woman to prepare themselves to have the most efficient labour possible. Feedback suggests that Prebirthing Acupuncture offers a range of positive effects that goes beyond reducing the time spent in labour, with midwives reporting a reduced rate of medical intervention including medical inductions and caesarean sections.

The treatments start at week 36/37 and are had approximately once a week until the birth.  In between sessions, acupressure can be worked with to help to support the acupuncture sessions.

This work is from Debra Betts, a nurse and acupuncturist from New Zealand whom I have trained with in person.

“Research on the use of acupuncture to prepare women for labour first appeared in 1974 with a study by Kubista and Kucera. Their research concluded that with this acupuncture protocol once a week from 37 weeks, gestation was successful in reducing the mean labour time of the women treated. Acupuncture supports cervical ripening and can shorten the time interval between the woman’s expected date of delivery and the actual time of delivery.”

Postnatal Acupuncture

The postnatal period refers to the six weeks directly following childbirth.

Ideally acupuncture treatment is given once a week commencing from 2 weeks postpartum for a total of 3 weeks to promote stamina and an efficient recovery. Acupuncture can also be useful at this time to balance emotions, aid perineal healing and help with any breastfeeding problems.

Fertility and Pregnancy

I treat both men and women who are planning to get pregnant and who want to be in the best possible health in order to do so.  I specialise in pre-conception acupuncture dietary and lifestyle advice including yoga , in terms of physical postures and the breath.

During pregnancy I treat a wide range of treatments for women where there often is no alternative.  Treatments successfully treated for common ailments include:  Oedema , varicose vein, morning sickness , heartburn, back pain & anxiety.

I use both Acupuncture as a stand alone treatment or as a combination with the other modalities I work with to support and heal symptoms and manifestations, depending on the disorder.

Each treatment is tailor made to suit the individual. Dietary advice is also given in accordance with Traditional Chinese Medicine, the practice of which believes that when we eat well, it really does heal us but as we are all individual, this too is very unique & so different for each person.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping has been used throughout the world for thousands of years. Although it is usually associated with Traditional Chinese Medicine, it has also been traced to the Egyptians & Greeks throughout history and has been used as a medical tool as far back as 1000 BC.

How does it work?

Cupping is a method of relieving local congestion by applying a partial vacuum that is created in a cup either by heat or by suction. In traditional Chinese medicine cupping is a method of applying acupressure by creating a vacuum on the patient’s skin.

The therapy is used for a number of different functions:

Cupping can be used on its own or in conjunction with Acupuncture treatments. When used alone it also stimulates the functions of the underlying Acupuncture points therefore is used as an effective alternative to needling. Because of this, cupping can be used to help other treatments such as fertility, headaches, insomnia, stress and migraine.

Insomnia

Life is full of inevitable changes in direction of work, health & lifestyle, some which are easier to deal with than others.

Acupuncture can be used to deal with these life changes & to help the body & mind deal with the challenges that these may bring.

Changes such as:

  • Post-traumatic stress

  • Relationship break-up

  • Relocation

  • Recovery from illness

  • Miscarriage

  • Death

Many people manage their stress to these situations by resisting or not facing these challenges which can lead to a constant state of exhaustion with side effects such as digestion problems & insomnia.

Acupuncture helps with these adjustments through:

  • Breath Awareness

  • Removing obstacles from deep within the tissues of the body

  • Taking control of the mind

  • Rebalancing the organs of the body

Quit smoking with Acupuncture

Acupuncture helps to permanently quit the habit of smoking by reducing craving & withdrawal symptoms. It has no side effects & enhances overall health.

The treatments consist of a combination of ear & body points, which are part of the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) protocol (insert link here -www.acudetox.com) which was founded in 1985 to promote the integration of the protocol in the treatment of addiction.

A typical cessation program consists of 5-6 treatments given in the first few weeks followed by a monthly treatment for the next 4-6 months. The number, length & frequency of treatments may vary from person to person & although it has been observed that although some symptoms are relieved after the first treatment, chronic symptoms require more treatment sessions.

Benefits:

  • Stops the cravings, both physical & psychological

  • Treats the side effects of smoking such as anxiety, depression & lung functioning

  • Decongesting of lungs/improves blood circulation

  • Psychological – enhances the feeling of wellbeing
